Showers of sparks cascaded off the side of the building and into the filthy, sooty chasm below. Bernie sniffed and his whiskers twitched as he adjusted one of the many dials on his welding torch. Everything had to be ship-shape for the viceroy's arrival. He was sure he almost had the leak in the cooling system totally fixed. A couple more patches and it would be back down to the engine room to run some more tests. A peculiar soul, Bernie had the head of a rat, with six long sticky insect legs and a human torso. His whiskers twitched again, he smelled something odd. Something pungent enough to come in over the metallic stench of molten solder. The moonlight flickered for just a moment. Bernie looked up and saw nothing out of the ordinary, just the tall tower reaching up into the dead air like a black icicle, and the hazy orange globe that was the full moon. Nonetheless, he decided it was no longer safe to be outside tonight, he would have to finish up in the morning. He slung the torch over his shoulder and scuttled up along the wall towards the maintenence hatch. He remained as calm as he could, but there was an urgency in his movements, his nerves were tense, and a chill ran over his skin.
